A very special and rare extra-mature Oban, unusually matured in refill European oak butts, that’s quite ethereal and especially maritime in nature. This maritime Oban has an astonishingly varied nose as far ranging as the Sea Eagle depicted on its arresting pack design, and a powerful palate. Britain's largest raptor, the Sea Eagle is a majestic sight around the cliffs of Oban, and lives for up to the age of this release, 21 years.

Oban is a little gem of a distillery, founded in 1794. It is one of Scotland’s smallest, so small that there is no room for the worm tubs next to the still house, and the stills themselves are tiny. Not only are they “sma’ stills”; they do not run continuously, for rest is needed to maintain the spirit’s light, fruity and spicy character. This contributes to its small annual production and the special rarity of older releases.

Tasting Notes

Appearance

Full gold. Delicate beading.

Nose

A dry maritime aroma, with warm sand, dry seaweed and crystalline salt. Beyond this, fruitcake seen through peat, menthol, linseed oil, barley sugar, wet sand and charred timbers. In time, hints of toasted marshmallow and lemon curd on wholemeal toast.

Body

Deceptively smooth and syrupy.

Palate

Powerful, with a creamy texture, and surprisingly sweet, with some salt. Intense, cooling and coating. Then drying, with cocoa powder, toasted coconut, spearmint and menthol; behind this, aniseed around a hazelnut nougat core.

Finish

Relatively short, spicy and cooling, yet also sweetly warming, with menthol and subtle smoke; traces of ash and ginger, a sandy note, and a hint of charred grass on a sea breeze.
