The very first cask to be filled at Auchroisk when distilling began on 15th January 1974, this cask has been kept back for many years for its character and its rarity. Remarkably rich and spicy, with fruity aromas and smooth flavours.

“This single European Oak butt was the first cask filled at Auchroisk when distilling began on January 15th 1974. The clear new-make spirit was unusually smooth and sweet; a fact reportedly acknowledged by a rival distiller as the first whisky flowed from the stills at the opening ceremony. He may have been tasting this very whisky.

Auchroisk was a striking new distillery, winning architectural awards. The whisky itself surpassed even this when the first single malt, a 12 year old, was voted best of thirty-four different malts tasted by an expert panel. “Consistently charming while the others... attempted to take our palates by storm”, said one. It further charmed the IWSC judges to win a prestigious Trophy in 1989.

I have been keeping this first cask back for many years, for its character as well as its rarity; it is remarkably rich and spicy, with fruity aromas and smooth flavours that have evolved so well. Sweet baked apple on a brambly, wooded base leads into a creamy texture and a sweet taste, bold on the tongue with rich fruits, that softens to a spicily drying finish.

After 47 years I find this unrepeatable bottling, which is also this year’s oldest Prima & Ultima release, something of a miracle. It is the very first Auchroisk. The oldest ever bottled. A cask wonderfully rich in flavour. And the only opportunity you may ever have to drink a single malt whisky this mature, from the first cask filled on the distillery’s first day.”
