This is the very last cask of whisky which was made at Cragganmore on coal fired stills – cask #2301 – before the switch to oil-fired steam heating. A remarkable piece of history from a single first fill ex-Sherry butt, the whisky’s flavours run deep with hints of dark chocolate, it has a long fresh and drying finish.

Bottled: 10.12.19 | Cask #2301 - First-fill ex-sherry butt
Number Bottled: 352 | Ballindalloch, Speyside

One of eight bottlings in the Prima & Ultima Collection.

"This is a stunning Cragganmore, from our very last cask made there on coal-fired stills, before the switch to oil-fired steam heating in 1972. It’s a remarkable piece of history: an ‘old school’ whisky from 1971 that is simply unique now, in a bottling that can never be repeated.

Matured for almost half a century in a single first-fill ex-sherry butt, in itself very rare for Cragganmore, it’s unusually dark in colour as you’d expect of a first-fill butt. The nose is rich in sherry top notes, hugely complex as only Cragganmore can be, with treacle toffee, prunes in syrup, raisins, and espresso coffee. The flavours run deep, with tarred ropes, dark chocolate, wine-soaked fruits, a wood-spiced, peppery mid palate, and a long, fresh and drying finish with lingering hints of leather. As you sip this unique survivor, a magnificent malt made almost fifty years ago, you’ll realise that our forefathers knew a thing or two...."
